Information

What is Battle of the Books? Battle of the Books is a reading incentive program designed to encourage students to read good books and have fun while competing with peers. Students participate by reading the 10 books on the grade appropriate reading list (on the back). Students form teams, select a spokesperson, and study the books. Teams then meet in a competition refereed by a questioner and a timer and answer a set number of questions. The top teams from each school go to the district level competition where a winning school will be declared the district champion.

Is Battle of the Books right for my student? Students need to be willing to commit time for reading, meet with their team and sponsor to discuss the books, as well as participate in mock competitions to prepare for the district event. Students are not required to have their own copy of the books. However, if your student would like to have his/her own copy to mark important information or make notes, these books are readily available at local bookstores or online. Please see the lists provides on the back. Most likely, we will have some after-school practice in January for 3rd/4th grade and February for 5th grade.

Also, if your child is selected to represent our school at the district event, they will need to be available all evening starting at 5:30 p.m. on February 25 for 3rd & 4th grade and April 21 for 5th grade at Tascosa High School.
